In a story that may say more about the hypersensitive state of race relations in post-Obama America than it does about racism, the University of Florida finds itself at the center of a controversy over a faculty member hurrying along students as they walk across stage to receive their diplomas.

"During one of this weekend's commencement ceremonies, we were inappropriately aggressive in rushing students across the stage", Fuchs wrote in a statement on Twitter.

Another student, Nafeesah Attah, told "GMA" that the dances were symbolic gestures of joy that had meaning rooted to their fraternities and sororities.

The students said they were observing a long-held tradition among black fraternities and was "strolling" after getting their college degrees when the usher grabbed them and shoved them to move along.

A formal apology was issued Sunday from University of Florida President Kent Fuchs, saying the college was "inappropriately aggressive" to some students. "I want to personally apologize for us doing that on behalf of myself and the University of Florida". He also apologized in person at another commencement ceremony on Sunday.

"It kind of goes with the pattern that the university has of how they treat minorities, especially black students", he said.

Christopher Garcia-Wilde, 22, who graduated Saturday, told the Gainesville Sun he noticed students who were taking slightly more time than others being rushed while black students who took more time were being aggressively pushed. "They both were pushed and one of them got an entire bear hug".

"I had just started ... and he picked me up and turned me around, which I thought was kind of embarrassing and degrading to be handled in that manner", Telusma told the Gainesville Sun.

"We very much believe that this was a time for celebration", Winick said. "So the university just regrets that the acts of those who were monitoring the lineup could dampen the spirits of the day".
