PH-US joint military exercises kick off in Luzon
This year, 3,000 U.S. troops are expected to join different exercises such as humanitarian assistance and disaster response (HADR) operations, counter-terrorism, and urban warfare among others.
Balikatan ("shoulder-to-shoulder") is an annual US-Philippine military bilateral exercise focusing on missions including humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, counterterrorism and mutual defense operations to improve response effectiveness.
The Balikatan exercises opened today and were to involve combat drills in mock urban settings to train special forces in battling terrorists in cities following the Islamic State group-linked siege on southern Marawi city past year.
According to the US Ambassador to the Philippines, Suna Kim, a model will be a military operation past year in the city of Marawi (Philippines), which was conducted over 5 months. "That includes worldwide terror networks, as well as natural threats", the envoy added.

Vidallon said every year both American and Filipino forces are trying to level up the training and this year's 34th iteration of the two countries' biggest annual military exercise is no exception.

"This exercise was scheduled already whether those missiles were there or not and again, this is region of change".
