The Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) and Samajwadi Party have chose to join hands to contest the upcoming by polls to two seats in Uttar Pradesh against the ruling BJP.
As far as the Kairana seat is concerned, where the RLD was keen to field Jayant Chaudhary in the bypoll, the party is understood to have agreed to extend support to a Samajwadi Party candidate, whereas it will field its candidate in Noorpur, a senior RLD leader said. She is the former MP and mother of the former Kairana SP MLA Nahid Hasan.
A decision to this effect was taken following a meeting between RLD vice-president Jayant Chaudhary and SP chief Akhilesh Yadav in Lucknow on Friday.
Exuding confidence that the RLD will win the crucial Kairana bypoll, Ahmad said, "The process of forming a coalition (against the BJP) has started and soon, a mahagathbandhan (grand alliance) will be formed". Sources, however, claim that the party was unlikely to field its candidates and would support the SP-RLD alliance.
The Kairana bypoll was necessitated by the death of its sitting MP Hukum Singh in February.
Commenting on the development, state BJP general secretary Vijay Bahadur Pathak, who is in charge of the party affairs in western Uttar Pradesh, said, "The confusion arising out of such political manipulations will lead to the opposition's defeat and the BJP will emerge victorious with the people's support".

The counting of votes for both the constituencies will take place on May 31.
The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has already announced that it will remain neutral and will not contest the bypolls.
After a three-hour long meeting, the spokesperson of RLD, Anil Dubey confirmed that both the parties will be contesting in the upcoming bypolls and 2019 Lok Sabha polls together, says a report by News18. SP is hoping that while the dominant Muslim population and Dalits will rally behind her, she will get Jat votes too since she is the RLD candidate.
