Illinois Wesleyan qualified by defeating North Central of Chicago 19-4 in the CCIW title game. The Cats did not receive one of the tournament's top eight seeds, and therefore will miss out on hosting first- and second-round action. Notre Dame is No. 7 and will play host to Denver.

The NCAA Tournament selection committee considers each school's total body of work and the Greyhounds had more quality wins than the Midshipmen. It was the third year in a row Maryland won the conference title game.
