A huge chunk of high pressure stretching from the Azores in the south-west to Scandinavia is driving Britain's baking Bank Holiday outlook.

Ms Yeomans said: 'Monday should be the warmest Spring Bank Holiday on record, the highest temperature on record is 23°C but we are expecting it to be 28°C on Monday.

'There will be highs of 25°C on Sunday and it will be a warm sunny day for most of the United Kingdom, the north west might have some cloud but it still will be a warm day'.

The early May bank holiday was only introduced across the United Kingdom in 1978, although it has been established in Scotland since 1871.

RAC traffic spokesman Rod Dennis said: "While wall-to-wall sunshine might not be on the cards for everyone this bank holiday weekend, many will still be keen to make the most of the early May warmth by escaping in the vehicle to spend time with family or friends".
