Young Americans Feel Lonelier Than The Elderly

Recent research has shown that people who are lonely and isolated are more likely to have heart disease and stroke, get immune system problems, and may even have a harder time recovering from cancer.

The evaluation of loneliness was measured by a score of 43 or higher on the UCLA Loneliness Scale, a 20-item questionnaire developed to assess subjective feelings of loneliness, as well as social isolation.

Researchers surveyed 20,000 adults using the University of California, Los Angeles Loneliness Scale, which has respondents rate how closely they feel about 20 specific statements. Cigna says loneliness is riskier than obesity and the effect on mortality is similar to smoking more than 15 cigarettes a day, citing a report published in 2010.

The new report, produced in partnership with the Ipsos polling company, is based on an online survey of more than 20,000 US adults using the well-regarded UCLA Loneliness Scale to see how widespread loneliness is in America.

Young people in America are reporting loneliness and poor health more than the elderly people, according to a new survey. Keys to not being lonely? These included less frequent and meaningful in-person interactions; spending less time with family and the feeling of having poor social skills or relationships.

'We're seeing a lack of human connection, which ultimately leads to a lack of vitality - or a disconnect between mind and body, ' said David M. Cordani, president and chief executive officer of Cigna. Cordani said that if the young people develop a more positive sense of health they will become less destructive.

Respondents who had too much or too little of any of these activities had higher reported scores of loneliness. "What our study actually found, however, is that the level of attachment with social media really did not impact loneliness one way or the other", Nemecek explained.

"We must change this trend by reframing the conversation to be about "mental wellness" and 'vitality" to speak to our mental-physical connection.

The report also found that Americans who live with others are less likely to be lonely than those who live alone.

Those gainfully employed and retirees also reported less feelings of loneliness compared with homemaker, students and those forcibly unemployed.
