20 million Saudis set to watch World Cup opening match

In March, B.C. Premier John Horgan said he was not willing to write a "blank cheque" to have Vancouver host soccer matches for the FIFA World Cup in 2026.

The United Bid is expected to generate more than $14 billion in revenue and $11 billion in profits for FIFA, which will be shared with the 211 FIFA Member Associations, helping further develop and expand the game of football across the globe.

The North American proposal is referred to as United 2026, as it bested a rival Moroccan bid, 134 votes to 65.

The last time the USA hosted the World Cup was in 1994, with Brazil winning the tournament at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. "So it's great news to hold the FIFA World Cup, but it's already money that was going to be invested and I think that's important". And given that the 2026 tournament will be the first to host 48 teams-16 more than traditionally, infrastructure was a crucial factor. Under the terms of the bid, Canada and Mexico will each host 10 matches.

Montopoli, speaking for the Canadian portion of the bid, said only that they had the government guarantees they had required.

Morocco has largely avoided competing with the North Americans in a dash for cash. Montreal city councillor Rosannie Filato said during a media scrum Wednesday at Centre Nutrilait, the Montreal Impact's training facility, that Montreal will host between three and six games.

To prepare for the 2015 Women's World Cup, the stadium got new locker rooms, which are now used by visiting CFL teams, Jevne said.

While Canada has never hosted-or even qualified for-the men's World Cup, it can count on its more experienced co-hosts and current NAFTA partners.

In 2026, however, there won't be any official World Cup festivities in Chicago, after Mayor Rahm Emanuel pulled out of the North American bid in March. The final will be played at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, home to the National Football League's New York Giants and New York Jets.
