A small asteroid disintegrated over Africa

A small asteroid about the size of a boulder slammed into Earth's atmosphere Saturday (June 2), incinerating itself in a brilliant fireball caught on video.

The asteroid, dubbed 2018 LA, was discovered out near the moon's orbit early Saturday morning, aiming straight for Earth.

Video Scientists at NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office have made a rare sighting - an asteroid on a collision course with Earth.

The administrator of the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies, Paul Chodas at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory of NASA said that this is only the 2 time that the location of entry of the asteroid was estimated with enough time beforehand.

"This was a much smaller object than we are tasked to detect and warn about", NASA's Planetary Defense Officer, Lindley Johnson, said in a statement on Sunday. About eight hours after these images were taken, the asteroid entered Earth's atmosphere (about 12:44 p.m. EDT, 6:44 p.m. local Botswana time), and disintegrated in the upper atmosphere near Botswana, Africa.

Nasa's Near Earth Object Centre said that Asteroid 2018 LA was travelling at 27, 738 miles per hour and was about the size of a small vehicle. Here's how to know for sure! The first asteroid that was detected to fall on our planet was "2008 TC3", four meters in diameter, discovered 19 hours before the impact, which occurred above northern Sudan.

Trajectory path of ZLAF9B2 (2018 LA) plotted across Oceania, the Indian Ocean and Africa. It appeared as a bright streak coming in force with a spectacular fireball.

Footage of the asteroid's demise was later shared online by South Africans Barend Swanepoel and Melissa Delport.

YouTubeNasa's Near Earth Object Centre said that Asteroid 2018 LA was travelling at 27, 738 miles per hour.

Astronomers Need long-term data to correctly determine the trajectory of both asteroids and, as 2018 LA had only been identified they did not have a lot to continue. This is because asteroid detection depends on telescopes picking up sunlight reflected off the asteroid's surface.

In addition to monitoring the Earth, NASA also tracks the asteroids from space. The bigger an asteroid is, the farther away it can be detected. No damage or injuries were reported, but small meteorites could possibly be found on the ground.

Preliminary data indicates that asteroid 2018 LA entered the air at approximately 15 kilometers/second (or even 54,000 km/h) and released energy equivalent to some half-kiloton of TNT.
