The tech company said the change is aimed at blocking hackers, not at hindering law enforcement agencies from doing their jobs, Reuters reported. Many such efforts rely on gaining access through the Lightning port for which Apple is now restricting access.

"We're constantly strengthening the security protections in every Apple product to help customers defend against hackers, identity thieves and intrusions into their personal data", Apple said in a prepared statement.

Apple MacBook 2017 review - Ultimate laptop in pictures Sat, August 5, 2017 APPLE'S new MacBook is the ultimate portable laptop and now offers more power and improved design. In practical terms, that could cut access by as much as 90 percent, security researchers estimate.

Apple said that after it learned of techniques being used against iPhones, it reviewed the operating system code and made a number of improvements to the security. The two have battled over Apple's encryption on its devices, which makes it hard for law enforcement agencies to break into and get data from phones they procure. In a case that made plenty of headlines in 2016, it refused to help the Federal Bureau of Investigation get into a phone that mass shooter Syed Rizwan used before he and his wife killed 14 people and wounded 22 others in San Bernardino, California.

The early stages of Wednesday's offensive followed statements from UAE and Saudi officials that military action was necessary. The United Nations and worldwide aid organizations pulled staff out of the city and surrounding area before the deadline.

The announcement is one more piece of Apple's effort to position itself as a champion of user privacy, an approach that has put it at odds with law enforcement in the US.

USB-C cables were first launched in 2014 and have since become increasingly popular with many forms of technology.

That's a unusual thing to say, because Apple would actually be late to the party if it ends up switching to USB-C in 2019. The FBI ultimately contracted a third party to break into the phone. The popularity of Type-C interface among handsets will still depend on the adoption in Apple's iPhones, nevertheless, the sources said. The FBI blamed "programming errors".
