At least one dead in Arkansas over romaine lettuce E. coli outbreak

The US Food and Drug Administration, which is investigating the outbreak alongside the CDC, believes that the probable link to all these illnesses is romaine lettuce sourced from the winter growing areas in and around the Yuma growing region in Arizona.

Restaurants and retailers that were hit by lawsuits related to the romaine lettuce-related E. coli outbreak include Panera Bread, and Walmart's Sam's Club division Taylor Farms.

So far, across 35 states, a total of 197 people contracted an infection from the tainted Romaine lettuce.

Nationally, five people have died from E. coli poisoning from the tainted leafy greens; no deaths have been recorded in Texas.

"Most of the newly reported cases are people who became sick two to three weeks ago, still within the window when contaminated romaine was available for sale", said the CDC statement. The four other deaths were reported in Arkansas, Minnesota and NY, according to the CDC. Prices for whole heads of romaine lettuce were down 60%. The last harvest was collected on April 16, and because the lettuce only has a 21-day shelf life, it is highly unlikely that any lettuce covered by the advisory is still available.

Eating the contaminated lettuce may cause diarrhea, vomiting and even kidney failure in severe cases. Of these, 89 people were hospitalized, reports the Chronicle.info with reference on the Letters. People of any age can become sick, although the very young and the elderly are more likely to develop serious symptoms.

Marler Clark, The Food Safety Law Firm, is the nation's leading law firm representing victims of E. coli outbreaks and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). For example, the CDC emphasize that proper hygiene is the most effective way to minimize this risk.

In addition, proper food preparation is key.

Wash or scrub all fruits and vegetables under running water before eating, cutting, or cooking. Plus, use separate cutting boards for fruits and veggies and raw meat, seafood, and poultry to avoid cross contamination.

"This is a higher hospitalization rate than usual for E. coli O157:H7 infections, which is usually around 30 percent", the agency noted.
