Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin will square off in their highly-anticipated rematch in September in Las Vegas, boxing promoter Oscar De La Hoya said on Wednesday.

De La Hoya's announcement came shortly after negotiations between Alvarez's and Golovkin's respective camps looked to be breaking down.

He claimed it was a result of eating contaminated meat but was forced to withdraw from the original rematch after being given a six-month suspension, backdated to the first failed test on 17 February.

"I'm happy to inform that we have a fight September 15!", De La Hoya tweeted Wednesday.

Golden Boy Promotions imposed a noon PT deadline for GGG to accept an improved offer under which Alvarez would get the majority of a 57.5 percent-42.5 percent revenue split.

But now, at long last, Golovkin himself and his promoter Tom Loeffler have also given confirmation.

He has won 49 and drawn two of his 52 fights.

Golovkin (38-0-1, 34 KOs) and Alvarez fought to a controversial draw in their first meeting in September in a fight that generated 1.3 million pay-per-view buys and a $27 million gate - the third largest in boxing history. Golovkin originally asked for half, then demanded 45 percent, but in the end settled for a little less than he wanted - and a little more than Alvarez wanted to give.

If the former WBA world middleweight champion doesn't fight Alvarez next, Jacobs is expected to box Sergiy Derevyanchenko for the vacant IBF middleweight title at some point in October.
