Terence Crawford Dominates Jeff Horn En Route to 9th-Round TKO

Crawford punished Horn in a one-sided fight, stopping him in the ninth round to win a world title in his third division on Saturday night in the main event of the Top Rank Boxing on ESPN+ card before 8,112 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

The Hornet tried to swarm Crawford in Round 6 but he was met with sharp repellant every time in the shape of the southpaw's deadly right jab and snapping left cross.

Despite the pre-fight antics, Horn made no excuses.

Crawford was comfortably under the weight at 146.5lb on his first try.

"But he's got to do it better than what he done to Pacquiao. We thought the ones given to us were calibrated correctly". It will be a hard road. "Terence would just get that odd shot, just that little bit more". He admitted he was "too predictable" for Crawford.

Horn, who had blown out to 70kg by the time he entered the ring, never looked comfortable. The welterweight division is stacked with other interesting challengers for Crawford though. If he is not now the best boxer on the planet, he is certainly in the conversation.

Terence Crawford, left, and Jeff Horn, of Australia.

Now, Horn is 18-1-1 while Crawford picked up his 24th TKO of his career. We've been out of the ring for a long time.

So where would he go from here? By the 9th, Horn was busted up and a visibly beaten man.

Outside of the unlikely chance that Horn's size becomes a problem and Crawford somehow doesn't carry his punching power up to a new division, it's incredibly hard to concoct a scenario in which anything Horn can do will slow Crawford down.

There was absolutely no dispute about any aspect of the proceedings at the MGM Grand casino, where this column has happier memories of watching then "new" Aussie Kostya Tszyu win his first world title bout against a Puerto Rican named Jake "The Snake" Rodriguez back in the early 90s.

Crawford should have his pick of opponents after this. Crawford landed 155 of 367 punches in the fight with a 42 percent accuracy rate.

The 30-year-old from Omaha, Nebraska, improved to 11-0 (eight knockouts) in world title fights, the most wins by an active American fighter. While Horn was still on his feet and attempting to fight back, it was definitely the correct decision.

Horn has struggled to make weight previously but his camp was supremely confident about his preparation, saying he was in the best shape of his life and woke up needing to lose only 1kg on Saturday.

After the bout, Crawford said he wanted to take on the other champions in the division, per the ESPN+ live stream. "I'm sure my wife Jo is glad he stopped it when he did". The Americans are doing everything they can to rattle Horn.

Horn said he wasn't stressed at all by what happened. "I'm disappointed but not hurt at all". "I'm bigger, I'm stronger, I'm in my prime and that's going to show on Saturday. They seem to think I'm actually a lot mentally weaker than I am". "He's a classy fighter who fought a great fight".

That was a forlorn hope. He poked it out again at the end and his first words were all about himself with hardly a second glance for his vanquished opponent. If he wants to fight three fights a year or four fights a year, we have the dates for him. This guy is a class above that Manny Pacquiao.
