The Guardian say that the Gunners had officials in Milan yesterday to discuss personal terms with the midfielder's representatives having reached an agreement with Sampdoria.

Torreira has a release clause set at €25m in his contract, but to avoid paying a big fee all in one go, Arsenal are prepared to pay €5m more.

Torreira is Arsenal's main central midfield target and they are hoping to reach an agreement on a deal for the Uruguay worldwide, who has a €25 million release clause.

Arsenal fans have reacted excitedly to news of the possible transfer on social media, with one fan going so far as to describe Torreira as a mixture of N'Golo Kante and Andres Iniesta.

The 17-year-old had initially agreed to join the Gunners upon the expiration of his contract at the Parc des Princes, with new Gunners head coach Unai Emery playing a significant part in persuading Adli to join the club.

Napoli are also said to have shown interest in holding midfielder Torreira, who started 36 of Sampdoria's 38 Italian top-flight outings in the season just finished, but Arsenal's offer reflects their desire to wrap up a deal as quickly as possible.

The second signing will very likely be another addition to the back line, Borussia Dortmund's Sokratis Papastathopoulos.

Arsenal were tracking Adli as early as March, when a source close to PSG revealed that Manchester City, Barcelona and Bayern Munich were also keen, but he was expected to sign professional terms in Paris until Emery's departure was confirmed.
