Multiple lawsuits and protests are expected to follow.

There are a few states that are battling the repeal of net neutrality within their own governments, both NY and Washington have already passed legislation that stops or discourages internet providers from favoring content. California is now in the process of passing a similar law, which will give users stricter protections that those under the Obama Era net neutrality rules.

But critics claim that the FCC's new rules could invite internet service provides an opportunity to slow down its competitors' content. Pai told CBS that the Federal Trade Commission will work to prevent such cases of "bad apples in the internet economy" from taking place. The idea was to keep the internet open and uncensored.

Supporters of the repeal say that it will remove problematic regulations.

In an op-ed for CNET on Monday, Pai wrote that the Obama-era rules requiring internet service providers to treat all web traffic equally were too onerous.

E-commerce start-ups have feared that they could end up on the losing end of paid prioritization, with their websites and services loading more slowly than those run by internet behemoths.

"Those "fast lanes" will put those who won't or can not pay in the slow lane, making the internet look a lot like cable TV", said Gigi Sohn, a former counselor for the FCC.

The US has officially repealed rules that governed the way net providers treated the data that travelled across their networks. Now the vote goes the House, which has until the end of the year to bring to a vote.

However, you might not see any immediate changes today.

Lawmakers and tech companies are still fighting to save net neutrality. Per a report from Slate, governors in both NY and Montana have signed executive orders to keep net neutrality in place. The US Congress also plans to debate a motion to overturn the FCC decision. Congress could step in if several states pass their own legislation, and given the Republican majority, advocates for net neutrality are skeptical about the outcome.
