Facebook kept sharing data with Nissan, others

Facebook banned Kogan's quiz app after learning of the data breach and apparently gave companies until May 2015 to stop collecting user data-but according to the Journal, the site gave extensions to certain companies.

However in a new report from The Wall Street Journal, it seems that Facebook was still allowing some companies to continue to access user data and those of their friends. They show that Facebook gave special data access to a broader universe of companies than was previously disclosed.

"That included information like phone numbers and a metric called "friend link" that measured the degree of closeness between users and others in their network, the people said", the daily reported.

Among the companies with which Facebook has agreed to transfer data, Royal Bank of Canada and Nissan Motor, explain the sources of The Wall Street Journal, noting that these firms either publish ads in social media or were useful in other ways. The company also says it is phasing out the data-sharing deals that it has struck with device makers dating back to 2007.

Facebook has copped to the agreements, which it said lasted between just weeks to several months, but tried to minimise them as much as possible.

"In 2014, all developers were given a year to switch to the new, more restricted version of the (app programming interface)", Archibong said.

However, it is unclear how many companies agreed to the whitelists and for exactly how long.

Woman Dons Mask to Collect Lottery Winnings And Conceal Identity
She won $180 million in Jamaican dollars, which is the equivalent of $1 million USD. "The mask this person wore tells me N. A Jamaican lottery victor could not stop smiling - and winking - as she bagged just over 180m Jamaican dollars (£1m).

"As we were winding down over the year, there was a small number of companies that asked for short-term extensions, and that, we worked through with them".

The new report emerges as FB seeks to recover from the data scandal that rocked the company in March.

Per the Journal, Facebook internally called the deals "whitelists", which may be a little bit of insight into how the company viewed the arrangements.

As Common Dreams reported on Monday, the report showing that Facebook cut deals with device-makers appeared to show that CEO Mark Zuckerberg flat-out lied to Congress when he asserted that users of the platform have "complete control" of who can and can't see their personal data.

Facebook is already facing severe backlash globally for improperly sharing personal data of up to 87 million people with UK-based Cambridge Analytica.
