"As we have learned in the wake of the collapse of the 1994 and 2005 agreements, North Korea is liable to backtrack on vague commitments as soon as it's in their interest".

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, right, speaks as South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha, center, and Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono listen during a joint news conference in Seoul, June 14, 2018. Trump has drawn bipartisan criticism at home for agreeing to pause joint U.S.

There were worries, especially in Tokyo and Seoul, which have huge USA military presences, about Trump agreeing to halt US military exercises with South Korea, which the North has long claimed were invasion preparations.

In North Korea, the official KCNA news agency described the summit as an "epoch-making meeting" that would help foster "a radical switchover in the most hostile (North Korea)-US relations".

Now that's frankly ludicrous.

"Not all of that work appeared in the final document", Pompeo said.

"Let's see if I have this straight", she said.

"One can't completely denuclearize without validating, authenticating".

With Pompeo in the driver's seat pushing negotiations forward, it will be his job to ensure nervous allies wondering why Washington has handed Pyongyang a major concession while securing little concrete in return.

But the document has been criticised for lacking details on when or how Pyongyang would give up its weapons. "We didn't even discuss that, that wasn't discussed", Trump said in an interview with Voice of America.

Using the military exercises as a massive negotiating chip in exchange for the North denuclearizing is a pretty orthodox policy proposal, but it stunned nearly everybody that Trump seemed to be giving this away for free after his meeting. The exercises are meant to ensure that South Korean and US troops are ready to respond to sudden North Korean aggression.

And Pompeo will have to assuage concerns in Japan, too. And so do the North Koreans.

At his news conference, President Trump said it was hard to ensure anything but that he trusted his instinct that Mr Kim would abide by his word.

Pompeo also has to sort out exactly what the agreement entails.

So while those of us in the press cabin tried to sleep, the president continued to make calls and fire off tweets, travelling back in time to make the most of his historic day.

In a joint declaration following their meeting in Singapore on Tuesday, the North Korean leader pledged to move toward complete denuclearization of the peninsula and Trump vowed to guarantee the security of the United States' old foe.

Donald Trump has become the first United States president to meet and shake hands with a North Korean leader.

The sanctions regime that has placed unprecedented restrictions on the North Korean economy is now likely to slip.

During his talk with Hannity, Trump said his inflammatory rhetoric helped spur this new meeting. -South Korea drills has been North Korea's "standard demand" for decades.

He said that Trump "made it very clear" that the suspension would only last while "good faith negotiations" continued. The joint statement released Tuesday was scant on the details, leaving the agreement between Trump and Kim vague.
