How President Trump factored into Tuesday's primaries

Trump attacks Republican up for re-election with reference to affair

Sanford faces a tough primary challenge in Tuesday's contest and a big part of the reason why is that he's been a staunch critic of the president's for the past three years.

Rep. Mark Sanford, who lost a bruising SC primary Tuesday after President Donald Trump tweeted support for his opponent, said Wednesday the idea the Republican Party now belongs to Trump was "not something that I buy into". On the day of the primary election, Trump tweeted that Sanford - who has voted with him 73 percent of the time - "has been very unhelpful to me in my campaign to MAGA". Arrington has attacked Sanford from the right, painting him as disloyal to Trump. "He is better off in Argentina", the president wrote, referring to Sanford's trip to South America in 2009 to have an affair while his unknowing staff in the governor's office told reporters he was hiking the Appalachian Trail.

True, in some communities, the only local races on the ballot - many of which drove turnout - were Republican. In his remarks Tuesday night, he said: "I stand by every one of those decisions to disagree with the president".

Trump congratulated Corey Stewart, his onetime Virginia campaign chairman and an immigration hardliner, for winning a GOP primary that will put him against incumbent Democratic Sen.

Sanford, a member of the hard right House Freedom Caucus, has always been one of the few congressional Republicans willing to openly break with Trump.

The Democratic primary in Maine's 2nd Congressional District has drawn national attention for becoming a faceoff between two kinds of candidates that the party has been trying to recruit in swing seats: Jared Golden, an Iraq War veteran and state representative, and Lucas St. Clair, the wealthy heir of the Burt's Bees fortune.

"In response to the president's tweet, Michigan Rep. Justin Amash came to his colleague's defense, hitting back at Trump's remarks by replying, "@MarkSanford's job is to support and defend the Constitution.

Another Republican who was also critical of Trump, Alabama GOP Rep. Martha Roby, is also at risk of losing re-election.

He was the top aide to Trump's presidential campaign in Virginia in 2016, but was sacked for staging an unauthorized protest of the Republican National Committee.

Pompeo says North Korea sanctions to remain until complete denuclearization
The current understanding between Kim and Trump may not be a complete American giveaway either, as some critics are asserting. Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono is also heading to Seoul and is due to meet with Pompeo and his South Korean counterpart.

"She's a woman, so it's the year of the woman", Hostin explained. "He is better off in Argentina", Trump tweeted.

"I think the thing is representation", Sara Haines explained.

To be sure, the president's track record of picking winners and losers in elections is not ideal. No wonder Mitt Romney, who once called Trump a fake and a con man, now embraces the Trump presidency as he runs a primary race for a Senate seat in Utah.

Democratic members on Tuesday said Trump handed Kim a public relations win and gave up major concessions like ending annual military exercises with South Korea.

The general election is set for November 6.

The South Carolina race highlighted primary voting in five states on Tuesday.

Four other states held primaries. He also questioned Trump's call for tariffs.

Then, in Nevada, Danny Tarkanian-another strong supporter of the president-won his primary to be the GOP nominee for Nevada's third congressional district, an all-important race where Republicans have an opportunity to flip a seat from Democrat control to GOP control. Now, we do not know if that tweet really turned the tide, but the perception surely is that Republicans will lose if they break with Trump.
