Kim summit helped world avoid nuclear catastrophe

US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un seemed to get along famously in Singapore

US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un seemed to get along famously in Singapore

Trump declared he and Kim had developed "a very special bond".

The two leaders met on Tuesday, signing a brief declaration on denuclearisation and reducing tensions.

Rather than a game-changer, this was more of a breakthrough in how the USA and North Korea talk to each other. The president would not elaborate on these hazy measures of time.

Japan's defence chief said on Wednesday that the U.S. military presence in South Korea and joint military exercises were "vital" for East Asian security.

Yu said that if the talks lead to a decreased nuclear threat from North Korea - the objective for US military officials being stationed in the region - then pulling USA troops should be on the table.

In a series of tweets, Trump sought to take political credit for the summit but risked undermining the United States strategy in the region.

After the whirlwind trip, Trump eagerly boasted, "There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea".

Pompeo, speaking to reporters in Seoul on Wednesday, sought to quell criticism that North Korea didn't make any major commitments at the summit in Singapore.

After Trump trade spat, UK’s May warns against unilateral action
If the tariffs are implemented, they will be applicable to all countries, including the US' largest imports - Mexico and Canada . Trump went on to say that the U.S. gets "unfairly clobbered" on trade despite "protecting Europe at great financial loss".

The president fired off another tweet less than an hour later, blasting the naysayers who condemned his decision to meet with Kim.

"The US-South Korea joint exercises and US forces in South Korea play significant roles for the security in East Asia", Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera told reporters Wednesday.

While the US has yet to confirm the contents of the reports, they suggest that the two leaders reached more verbal agreements than they put on paper, and made public.

The U.S. still maintains around 28,500 soldiers in South Korea. Donald Trump then guided Kim Jong-un to the library where the one-on-one meeting was to take place. "North Korea has great potential for the future!", he wrote.

Ultimately, that may end up being the only option that the USA has short of war. There are still few details about Trump's decision to suspend U.S. "war games" in South Korea, which could fuel discussion about a weakening of the alliance. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., said, adding that the Trump-Kim agreement is nothing more than a "few sentences on a sheet of paper" that were "very aspirational".

The state-run Korean Central News Agency said the two leaders "shared recognition to the effect that it is important to abide by the principle of step-by-step and simultaneous action in achieving peace, stability and denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".

On the way forward, Pompeo said, "I don't know exactly what the timing will be for our next conversation with the North Koreans". Even if this meeting doesn't lead to any breakthroughs - and there's good reason to be skeptical of that - a future USA president may be glad that Trump threw away that old rule book and gave him or her a freer hand.

Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un were returning to their respective strongholds following the talks _ but to far different receptions. During his press conference in Singapore, he turned to Pompeo when asked if there was a transcript. Trump said he would invite Kim to the White House "at the appropriate time" and that Kim had already accepted the not-yet-extended invitation. "They did not record it". Are there recordings of it?
