May strikes deal with pro-EU rebels ahead of crunch Brexit votes

Until just a few days ago, it looked like members of Parliament would overturn key parts of May's Brexit plans - and in turn wield the power to bring down her government.

In a statement, he added: "I am incredibly sad to have had to announce my resignation as a minister in Her Majesty's government so that I can better speak up for my constituents and country over how Brexit is now being delivered".

Among the 14 amendments to the Bill - set to be voted on by MPs on Tuesday and Wednesday - are changes which would see the United Kingdom stay in the Single Market and would allow Parliament to dictate future negotiating terms.

'But the message we send to the country through our votes this week is important.

Prime Minister Theresa May could face a possible backbench revolt and she has urged potential Conservative rebels to support the government.

A government minister has resigned over the UK's Brexit policy, saying he wants to "look my children in the eye and honestly say that I did my best for them".

A deal between the two factions was brokered last night, with Brexiteer Jacob Reed-Mogg and former minister Nicky Morgan putting their names to an amendment committing to a new "customs arrangement", replacing language on staying in the customs union.

The plea came as the EU (Withdrawal) Bill returns to the Commons tomorrow with ministers seeking to overturn a raft of amendments by the House of Lords meant to keep Britain close to the EU after Brexit.

Speaking to reporters outside the meeting, Solicitor General Robert Buckland confirmed the Government was in discussions with rebels about establishing a fresh amendment committing to seek a customs arrangement - not a union - with the EU.

The debate on a "meaningful vote" on any final Brexit deal is expected to come down to the wire after No 10 sources said it would not back a compromise deal offered by the leading Tory pro-Europe rebel Dominic Grieve.

"The government's position isn't a position, its a sham to get through the next 48 hours and keep Jacob Rees-Mogg in check".

The Brexit supporter told LBC radio on Monday that he would not expect people like pro-Remain MP Ken Clarke, who have "strong principles", to change their minds.
