Google's Pixelbook is some lovely, well-built hardware, but its use of Chrome OS means that for many people, it will be too limited to be useful. The inclusion of those code elements suggests that Google is working towards getting certified by Microsoft to allow Windows 10 to run on its Pixelbook.

XDA-Developers recently discovered mentions of Microsoft's WHCK (Windows Hardware Certification Kit) and HLK (Hardware Lab Kit), which give a strong indication that Google wants to get the Pixelbook hardware certified by Microsoft to run Windows 10. For buyers, it would mean the guarantee of drivers so that the Pixelbook's USB ports, touchscreen, webcam, and other hardware components would all play nicely with Windows software.

The HLK code line also specifically mentions "Eve" which is the codename for the Pixeblook.

Would the Google Pixelbook gain wider appeal if it could run Windows 10 when needed, as well as the native Chrome OS? And there are no guarantees that Google will actually ship this firmware: presently, most of the AltOS work is being done in its own separate branch, and it's possible that it will never be merged into the main firmware branch. At the time, though, it wasn't clear what OS and for what purposes. We previously reported that the developers were working on booting into Windows 10, but the references to HLK and certification is proof that this isn't just a side project or hack job.

The Google Pixelbook is a somewhat niche product because it runs ChromeOS.

While Windows on a Chromebook might sound like anathema at first glance, there are some good reasons why Google might be considering it.

Recent changes suggest that it is indeed Windows that Google is aiming for. Enter your email to be subscribed to our newsletter.
