Trudeau has not directly addressed Navarro's comments, but Canada's foreign minister, Chrystia Freeland, said the remarks were not "particularly appropriate or useful".

Speaking to ABC News, Republican Texas Senator Ted Cruz added his voice to the chorus of condemnation, saying: "You know, I will say I've seen some of the reporting on the various comments, and I have to note that I'm pretty sure that circles of hell are not reserved for Canadians proposing retaliatory tariffs".

A Trudeau spokesman, Cameron Ahmad, said Saturday night that Trudeau "said nothing he hasn't said before - both in public and in private conversations" with Trump.

"And for God's sake, doing it against Canada after the prime minister issued a fairly mild statement about the Canadians just standing their ground, and then to have him attacked on the Sunday-morning talk shows...." "Canadians, we're polite, we're reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around". Trump refused to endorse the group's joint statement, said Russian Federation should be readmitted, and traded barbs with Trudeau over an intensifying trade conflict.

On Monday, MPs in the House of Commons approved a motion denouncing Trump's name-calling tirade and endorsing Trudeau's decision to stand his ground against US tariffs and tweeted presidential threats.

"There's a special place in hell for any foreign leader that engages in bad faith diplomacy with Donald J. Trump", said Peter Navarro, a top Trump trade advisor.

"Why should I, as President of the United States, allow countries to continue to make Massive Trade Surpluses, as they have for decades, while our Farmers, Workers & Taxpayers have such a big and unfair price to pay?" he tweeted.

Michael Hayden, the former Central Intelligence Agency director under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, blasted President Donald Trump Monday as "unstable" following his actions at the G-7 summit in Canada this weekend.

And it concludes with a direct shot at Trump, calling on the House to "reject disparaging and ad hominem statements by USA officials which do a disservice to bilateral relations and work against efforts to resolve this trade dispute". The Canadian market place, Lampron added, "is too small to make a dent in USA overproduction".

He said Trump "did the courtesy to Justin Trudeau to travel up to Quebec for that summit". Trump said it was snapped as they waited for changes he'd requested to the communique he ended up pulling out of. The two then signed a joint agreement.

On Tuesday Trump reiterated his belief that the United States is "being taken advantage of by virtually every one" of the countries in the G7. "Our Tariffs are in response to his of 270% on dairy!"

Navarro piled on Trudeau during a Fox News interview on Sunday.
