Roger Federer hails Nadal's French Open achievement

Jun 10 2018 Paris France Rafael Nadal poses with the trophy after his men's singles final against Dominic Thiem on day 15

Nadal dealt with that ultimately minor inconvenience and claimed his record-extending 11th French Open championship Sunday by displaying his foe-rattling excellence in a 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 victory over No. 7 seed Dominic Thiem. He removed the tape from his left wrist and seemed to take a tablet.

When the trainer visited Nadal in his quarterfinal for a similar issue, Nadal said it was simply to prevent sweat from traveling to his hand. Throughout his 14 years competing here, Nadal has only lost two matches.

Sunday's final will be Nadal's 24th Grand Slam final, putting him second all time.

Nadal is now the first player in the Open Era, male or female, to win 11 titles at three different tournaments, having also completed La Undécima at Monte Carlo and Barcelona in April this year.

However, here past year in the semi-finals, Nadal destroyed Thiem, losing just seven games in a rout, but it is worth mentioning that Thiem triumphed in their last meeting in Madrid last month, in the quarter-finals.

But that's the best-of-three sets and in different, faster conditions. Nadal -5.5 games is available on the Exchange at [1.68] and given the fact that Nadal has tended to dominate Thiem on non-quick clay, this should be a very likely outcome if Nadal wins the final.

It was hard not to feel sympathy for Thiem, playing in his first Grand Slam final against a man who simply does not lose this particular battle.

But those are not quite the same as the French Open, where Nadal is 86-2 for his career.

It's impossible to know, looking ahead, just how much longer Nadal can do this. He lost the first set, then turned things around after a rain delay.

But against Thiem, there was nothing wrong with Nadal's start.

After Nadal won the first, there was an air of inevitability.

The duopoly has continued into this year, with the pair splitting the first two slams of 2018 - meaning they have carved up the last six between them. A few years ago, everyone thought he was done. The other three are Rod Laver, Ken Rosewall and Federer, all of whom have won four each.

Rafael Nadal was trying to make the point that time stops for no man.

Thiem dug in - especially in the roughly 13-minute sixth game - but he crumbled attempting to stay in the set, making four unforced errors. He dropped serve on a fifth break chance.

In Monday's rankings, Nadal is No. 1, Federer is No. 2.

His lone opportunity of the set indeed vanished.

Nadal retained the momentum in the second set, breaking his opponent in the second game and holding out to edge closer to yet another title at Roland Garros.

However, the exchange - with over £1.2 million traded on the match already - has Nadal as a [1.26] favourite, which is around a 6% difference in implied odds percentage and certainly enough to be actionable value.
