Caito Foods, LLC recalled its packages of pre-cut watermelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe, and fresh-cut medley products containing these melons after people reported feeling ill after eating the fruits, the CDC said in a news release.

Caito said the recall extends to retailers and consumers because the affected products shipped between April 17 and June 7 and may still be on store shelves.

-States getting the pre-cut melon: North Carolina, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Georgia, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio.

The head of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Sunday urged residents of eight USA states to check for recalled pre-cut melon that is linked to an outbreak of Salmonella.

The fruit was sold in clear, plastic containers at Costco, Jay C, Kroger, Payless, Owen's, Sprouts, Trader Joe's, Walgreens, Walmart, and Whole Foods/Amazon.

The FDA said it's working with the CDC to determine if the recalled products went to additional stores or states.

However, it wasn't until Friday that the CDC announced the connection to the multistate outbreak, said Karim Baroudi, Hancock Public Health commissioner. Kroger's pre-cut melon and pre-cut fruit salads sold in Kroger stores in Georgia are sourced from a different supplier, according to Kroger's Atlanta division corporate affairs manager Felix Turner. It says the five states where people were sickened are Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio. Kroger listed affected products on its website. The fruit was produced in a facility in Indianapolis, Ind.

Of the 60 victims reported sick, 31 have been hospitalized, but there are zero reported deaths. "Caito Foods has ceased producing and distributing these products as the company and FDA continue their investigation".
