Senate Leadership Blocks Up-Or-Down Vote On Corker Tariff Amendment

Tennessee Republican Sen. Bob Corker accused his party of cowering to President Donald Trump in an impassioned speech on the Senate floor Tuesday

Tennessee Republican Sen. Bob Corker accused his party of cowering to President Donald Trump in an impassioned speech on the Senate floor Tuesday

"A lot of people who want to put things that are non-germane and very often controversial", he said.

"I heard the senior senator from Texas saying the other day, 'well gosh, we might upset the president of the United States before the midterms!"

Corker, who is retiring at the end of his term, has been working for the past week to get a vote on his amendment that would give Congress the power to reign in the president's ability to impost tariffs on national security grounds, such as those on Canadian steel and aluminum which were announced this month.

"They want someone who's going to be like my father and fight and actually want to win, and actually want to win elections", he added.

Corker last week was told that his amendment may have a so-called "blue slip" issue should it reach the House of Representatives, a technical issue that requires revenue-related legislation to originate in the House. "'The president might get upset with us as United States senators if we vote on the Corker Amendment, so we're going to do whatever we can to block it!'" He was asked by Senate leadership to fix the issue, which is what he sought to do on the Senate floor. It happens all the time. Changing the shell of a bill is routinely done as part of the legislative process, including on the fiscal year 2017 NDAA.

De Niro once again revolted Against Trump
De Niro went off script in the Tony Awards telecast, and the offensive language was deleted from the broadcast, the CBS reported . It was hardly the first time that De Niro, who was born in NY and lives in the city, attacked fellow New Yorker Trump.

However, the stated rationale Tuesday for blocking Corker's bill, which he'd hoped to include as an amendment on the National Defense Authorization Act, involved procedural objections and concerns that its inclusion might slow down completion of the annual defense policy bill. If his unanimous consent agreement had been adopted, nothing else related to the NDAA or where the Senate now is in the process would have changed.

Rubio's tweet - which came while President Trump is lavishing praise on the North Korean dictator as "a strong guy" with "a very good personality" who is "very strategic" and "very impressive" - piqued Fox News host Sandra Smith, who pointed out to him, "the president, he sits down with Sean Hannity, he's talking about Kim Jong Un as someone who appeared to be amusing, he's smart, the president has said of him".
