Trade dispute has Canadian MPs standing together against US President Donald Trump

Trump announced yesterday he was backing out of a joint statement made by the countries that attended this weekend's G-7 Summit in Canada, after Trudeau gave a press conference in which he said Canada planned to retaliate against the Trump administration's recently-announced tariffs that will commence July 1.

Bruce Heyman, who was US ambassador to Canada during President Barack Obama's administration, called on Navarro in a tweet to formally apologize to Trudeau for his "insulting and inappropriate remarks".

Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders also referred to discussions between Trump and Trudeau on a "bilateral deal".

"It is at the very early stages, there has been no conclusion but that is an issue which the prime minister raised very clearly with the president in the bilateral meeting on Friday". Mulroney began working with Trudeau past year.

The United States is Canada's single biggest trade partner, with two-way exchanges of goods and services totalling $673.9 billion in 2017, and Washington enjoys a $8.4 billion surplus.

"Obviously we support the continuing efforts by the president on North Korea, we look forward to looking at the details of the agreement", Trudeau said Tuesday as he arrived on Parliament Hill for his weekly cabinet meeting.

Trump travelled to Singapore from Canada, where he met other world leaders.

Without any resolution, Trudeau has promised to impose retaliatory tariffs on metals and a range of other USA products by Canada Day. The tariffs came into effect on imports from Canada and the other originally exempted nations this month.

It says that MPs "reject disparaging ad-hominem statements by USA officials, which do a disservice to bilateral relations and work against efforts to resolve this trade dispute".

They subsequently warned they will not be easily bought off, while Tory Brexiteers urged ministers not to concede any ground. Conservative lawmaker Phillip Lee resigned as a justice minister Tuesday so he could speak out against the policy on Brexit.

The public sniping at a sitting leader of state by White House aides shocked some veteran diplomats.

Trump adviser Peter Navarro, meanwhile, said Tuesday he made a mistake when he said "there's a special place in hell" for Trudeau.

"In the name of the Western allies, he ought to come out today and wish President Trump well in the negotiations, instead of taking potshots at us", Kudlow said.

Among other insults the president levelled at the PM, Trump called Trudeau "very dishonest and weak", and accused Canada of ripping the US off in trade.

"My job is to stand up for Canadian workers, Canadian interests and I will do that without flinching", Trudeau said Saturday.

Though the decision comes with "regret", Trudeau said Canada would impose its measures "with absolute certainty and firmness".

Senior officials of the Trump administration piled on the smears.

"There's a special place in hell for any foreign leader that engages in bad faith diplomacy with President Donald J. Trump", Navarro insisted.
