Trump predicts ‘terrific relationship’ with Kim Jong Un as historic summit begins

With a handshake in Singapore, President Trump and Kim Jong Un made history Tuesday morning in the first meeting between a sitting USA president and the head of the North Korean regime.

In exchange, Trump committed to provide unspecified "security guarantees" to Kim.

Under Kim Jong Un, the third-generation dictator of the country established in 1948, North Korea has rapidly advanced its nuclear capabilities.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Monday the goal remains the complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, a policy laid out under the George W. Bush administration and continued through the Obama administration to this point.

Mr Lee, it said, complimented "the bold and admirable decision" by Mr Kim and Mr Trump to come together for the summit.

The two leaders met for about 40 minutes and were joined only by interpreters.

Trump has had recent discussions with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Chinese President Xi Jinping - who all have vested interests in the outcome - about matters he plans to raise.

The sides first spoke through intelligence channels, with U.S. analysts working to determine Kim's true willingness to abandon a nuclear program started by his grandfather and viewed by Pyongyang as a security blanket from outside aggressors. It will be the first ever meeting between a sitting US President and North Korean leader.

What we learned from the Trump and Kim handshake
Mr Trump was optimistic that the talks would prove productive, saying: "We're going to have a great discussion and I think tremendous success".

The 41-year-old had been linked with replacing Arsene Wenger at the Emirates Stadium following his former manager's departure. The ex-Manchester City, Inter Milan and Juventus midfielder was in his third season as head coach of New York City.

While advisers insist Trump has been reviewing briefing materials, he says his gut instincts will matter most when he gets in the room with Kim.

Regional experts are also skeptical Kim will give up any of his weapons regardless of his declarations, saying the Kim family playbook is for the regime to make promises, drag out its efforts to carry out those pledges as it gets concessions and then later renege altogether.

The two are due to meet on Tuesday on the resort island of Sentosa for their high-stakes summit, the first-ever talks between a US and North Korean leader and the culmination of a head-spinning diplomatic dance.

At the signing ceremony, Trump said he was "very proud" of what happened Tuesday and thanked Kim, reiterating that it was an "honor" to meet.

President Donald Trump talks with Kim Yong Chol, former North Korean military intelligence chief and one of leader Kim Jong Un's closest aides, as they walk from their meeting in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington, June 1, 2018.

The North has faced crippling diplomatic and economic sanctions, which began years before Trump's "maximum pressure" campaign, as it has advanced development of its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

"I think over the weeks that they spent with us, they gained greater confidence that we are sort of no-nonsense but efficient people", he said. Responding to reporters, Trump, who prides himself on his dealmaking skills, called Kim a "worthy negotiator". "I learned he's a very talented man. You would start at least a dialogue, because, you know, as a deal person, I have done very well with deals".
