Trump's Chief Economic Adviser Says Justin Trudeau "Stabbed Us in the Back"

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland said Sunday that Nafta talks are continuing, and that Canada believes "economic common sense will prevail" in the end.

Noting the USA imposition of tariffs was officially stated as a national security consideration, Freeland said: "We are very clear that Canada does not pose a national security threat to the United States".

In his tweets, Trump attacked Trudeau by calling him "dishonest and weak" and denouncing statements as "false". "They have tariffs on certain dairy and food products - 290 [to] 295 percent".

Earlier this year, Mr Trump had criticised India over import duty on the iconic Harley-Davidson motorcycles and had threatened to increase the import tariff on "thousands and thousands" of Indian motorcycles to the US.

Over the course of his presidency, Trump has inflamed allies with his isolationist policies, including withdrawing the USA from the Paris climate accord and the worldwide Iran-nuclear agreement.

"According to a Canada release, they make nearly 100 Billion Dollars in Trade with United States (guess they were bragging and got caught!)".

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in a statement: "We are focused on everything we accomplished at the G7 summit".

France has warned that "fits of anger" can not not dictate global cooperation after US President Donald Trump abruptly rejected a previously agreed joint statement in the wake of a fractious Group of Seven (G7) summit in Canada. "And that's what bad-faith Justin Trudeau did with that stunt press conference", said Navarro told "Fox News Sunday".

"Very dishonest and weak".

Donald Trump, in a tirade against countries he said are "robbing" the United States, targeted India once again on import tariffs, as he left the G-7 summit in Canada on bitter terms. Shortly afterward, the White House issued a separate photo showing a sitting Trump speaking as Merkel, Abe and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau listen.

Canadian officials, including Trudeau, have fanned out across the United States as part of a months-long charm offensive to appeal to pro-trade Republicans at every level. Trudeau made an error.

"Let's be serious and worthy of our people".

Navarro condemned Trudeau's statement as "one of the worst political miscalculations by a Canadian leader in modern Canadian history" and said Trudeau's promise of Canada pursuing retaliatory measures in response to Trump's tariffs was "nothing short of an attack on our political system". From promoting democracy and to fighting terrorism, "we're on the same page".

"I just don't see anything wrong with the American president suggesting that the G7 go back and have another discussion with Russia", Kudlow said on CNN's "State of the Union".

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said Mr Trump's announcement on Twitter had destroyed trust and Europe's answer must be to stick even closer together. Meanwhile, Canada is the top export market for the US, which had an $8.4 billion surplus with the country in 2017, according to the Office of the United States Trade Representative.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau shot back at Trump's comments at a press conference Saturday by saying Canadians "did not take lightly" that the American tariffs were introduced on a basis of national security, and that they would not be "pushed around".

Trump and Trudeau have been ramping up insults ― with Trump characteristically going further than Trudeau ― as the two countries bicker over tariffs.
