Treasury said Digital Security had provided material and technological support to Russia's Federal Security Services, or FSB.

Washington imposed additional sanctions against the intelligence services in March, when President Donald Trump's administration slapped sanctions on 19 individuals and five entities. More recently, USA officials also revealed that Kremlin-linked hackers staged a multi-year cyberattack campaign on the American energy sector and other elements of critical infrastructure.

The sanctions freeze any assets that those targeted may have in USA jurisdictions and bar Americans from doing business with them. Hacks in the runup to the U.S. presidential election in 2016 are also linked to Russian Federation.

A United States official did not immediately respond to a request for further details.

The two other Russia-based companies are Kvant Scientific Research Institute and Divetechnoservices. The latter provides underwater equipment and diving systems for Russian agencies. It also said that Russian Federation had been tracking undersea cables that carry the bulk of the world's telecommunications data. All three individuals added to the SDN list have been targeted by the USA sanctions due to their links to the Divetechnoservice Company, the Russian diving-equipment producer, according to the Treasury.

The three people named - Aleksandr Tribun, Oleg Chirikov and Vladimir Kaganskiy - reportedly have ties to Divetechnoservices, a company that allegedly specialises in hacking into undersea communications cables.
