USA, Canada and Mexico to host 2026 FIFA World Cup

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is heading to North America after a joint bid from the United States, Canada, and Mexico defeated Morocco in a landslide vote.

The United Bid on Wednesday won Federation Internationale de Football Association approval in a landslide 134-65 vote, marking the first time three nations will share the event.

The United States will host 60 out of 80 games, with the remaining 20 split evenly between Mexico and Canada.

Seventeen sites across the United States will host, including Philadelphia and East Rutherford, NJ, which will host the 2026 World Cup Final at MetLife Stadium.

It means global football's showpiece event will return to the North American continent for the first time since 1994 when the United States hosted the tournament.

The FIFA Congress held its annual meeting the day before the start of the World Cup to vote on whether the US -led bid or the Morocco bid will get to host the soccer tournament.

Canada and Mexico have already named its three host cities.

The North American bid had been deeply concerned by Trump's threat during the bidding process that nations that did not support it should not expect U.S. support on other issues. Hasseltine said. "We want to make sure the legacy lives forever and lives long beyond the games' being here".

The U.S. previously hosted in 1994 and the potential for a highly lucrative tournament, plus the existing stadiums and infrastructure, likely played a major role in swaying voters.

With only three teams in each group and each team guaranteed only two games, there is a greater opportunity for teams to collude with each other in the final group-stage matches to secure passage to the knockout round.

While Morocco, as expected, obtained strong support in Africa, the United bid's power base in Central and South America, plus some welcome backing from parts of Europe and Asia, made the difference. It also has proposed not one traditional opening match but three (one in each nation).

Interested in World Cup?

Even if Trump were to be elected for a second four-year term in 2020 he would not be in office when the World Cup kicks off in 2026. Hosting rights for previous World Cups had been awarded by what was then a 24-person FIFA Executive Committee. In the expanded competition, the Concacaf region, which represents North and Central America and the Caribbean, would still receive three additional slots, decided through the qualifying process, plus one team in an worldwide playoff. Canada qualified once, in 1986. FIFA said in May 2017 that the question will be answered by the FIFA Council at a later date, and no decision was made on Wednesday.

But the result was a bitter blow for Morocco after a fifth failed bid.
