Apple's own Lightning to USB 3 camera adaptor breaks USB Restricted Mode

Apple releases iOS 11.4.1 with USB Restricted Mode

Apple releases iOS 11.4.1 with USB Restricted Mode

iOS 11.4.1 users have the ability to flip the feature on or off under the Touch ID & Passcode or Face ID & Passcode settings menu, under USB Accessories.

The feature, which you'll find in iOS 11.4.1, locks down the data connection over the Lightning port one hour after the last time your iOS device is unlocked.

They suggest using the $39 Apple Lightning USB3 Camera Adapter.

The new USB Restricted Mode in iOS 11.4.1 simply prevents any USB accessories from connecting if the phone has not been unlocked in the last hour.

With the lock in place, data cannot be transferred to or from the Lightning port; it can only be used for device charging.

Trump narrows Supreme Court nominee to 4 names ahead of today's announcement
Support for nomination: Barrett also served as a law clerk to the late Justice Antonin Scalia, who is beloved by conservatives. In addition, she is the youngest of the leading candidates, and Trump has said he wants his nominee to serve for decades.

The restricted mode was put into a beta version of the latest update and has made it through to the final release, making it virtually impossible for law enforcement (or others) to gain access to someone's phone before the USB port is shut down. This means if you haven't turned the USB Accessories toggle on, and it has been more than an hour since your Apple device was locked, a USB accessory won't be able to communicate with your device.

What we discovered is that iOS will reset the USB Restrictive Mode countdown timer even if one connects the iPhone to an untrusted USB accessory, one that has never been paired to the iPhone before (well, in fact the accessories do not require pairing at all).

While Apple might fix the flaw in the next iOS 11.4 release or in the iOS 12, Afonin doesn't consider it as a severe vulnerability and calls it an "oversight".

Greyshift claimed it had already worked around that restriction but it might not have to, at least not for a while. iPhone users running iOS 11.4 right now have been complaining in droves that battery life has suffered after the update. The Grayshift boxes plug into the Lightning port and remove prolonged delays between PIN code attempts, allowing law enforcement (or criminals) to brute-force an unlock. The device can then be accessed once again through USB.

However, if a cop gets to seize a locked iPhone until the next iOS update that brings fix to this flaw, they can potentially get around the USB Restricted Mode through a USB accessory.
