Several flights to Bali cancelled after volcano spews smoke and ash

Anxious passengers thronged Bali's airport, waiting for news about their flights.

Bali's global airport reopened on Friday after it was closed for around 12 hours, following the eruption of Mount Agung, which spewed a cloud of ash up to 2,500 metres into the air.

It's far from the first time Agung has interrupted travel plans for WA holiday-makers, with a November eruption previous year causing chaos to flight schedules.

Earlier, authorities were forced to cancel 115 global flights and 203 domestic ones, affecting almost 27,000 travellers.

The regional Volcanic Ash Advisory Center in Darwin, Australia, said winds would carry the ash southwest toward Java, Indonesia's most densely populated island.

Ash cloud Mount Agung produces can pose a threat to aircraft flying in the area.

Mount Agung, in northeastern Bali, has erupted with various intensities since late past year and in December the airport was also closed for a period and thousands of residents were evacuated closer to the volcano.

Authorities raised the warning alert to the highest level on November 22 and ordered the evacuation of people living nearby after two days of eruptions.

Indonesia is the world's most active volcanic region and lies on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where tectonic plates collide, causing frequent volcanic and seismic activities.

The volcanic ash and vapour, posing the hazard, have been pushed west away from the airport.

AirAsia announced several Friday evening flights would be postponed until Saturday.

Most travel insurance policies for Bali have excluded any volcano-related incidents since it began erupting past year, as it is considered a known risk.

Six flights to and from Denpasar, affecting Brisbane and Sydney travellers, are being reviewed and could depart later than expected.

An earlier flight on AirAsia was called off before the airport was shuttered early yesterday morning. "So we've had two cancelled flights", Bird told AFP.

Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency said more than 8300 passengers worldwide had been affected.

"We will try our best to find a solution so all visitors can continue their trip", Made Mangku Pastika said.

An eruption in 1963 killed nearly 2000 people and was of the explosive intensity.
