Williams is perhaps best known for his role as Lando, who first appeared in The Empire Strikes Back in 1980.

The man who originated the charismatic character almost four decades ago is reportedly headed back to that far away galaxy for Star Wars: Episode IX, the upcoming installment in the blockbuster franchise.

Williams apparently backed out of attending a sci-fi/pop culture convention due to a filming conflict, igniting rumors that he's going to be part of the next Star Wars installment.

Rumours had recently surfaced around Lando's big return, which led me to do some digging on how the character's fared off-screen between the events of The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.

Billy Dee Williams will once again don his iconic cape to reprise his role as Lando Calrissian. Per THR's sources, Williams will indeed be returning to the Star Wars universe for the first time since 1983's Return of the Jedi.

But on the big screen it seemed like Williams would pass the mantle onto Donald Glover, who played the young version of the dashing gambler in this year's Han Solo-centric prequel, Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Last week The Americans star Keri Russel became the latest newcomer to the franchise, as it was reported she is in talks to secure an as-yet-unspecified role. Star Wars: Episode IX will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Abrams, Bad Robot, and Lucasfilm.
