Lydia Ko could not make a positive move as the Women's PGA Championship wrapped up at Kemper Lakes. After all, it was a sweltering week.

Carlota Ciganda (69) was one stroke back, with Ko, Moriya Jutanugarn (72) and Annie Park (69) at 4 under in the third of the LPGA Tour's five majors.

Following a brief weather delay, Park hit a birdie putt on the second playoff hole after Ryu missed her attempt to win her second major title.

She hugged her Irish caddie.

"After the front nine I couldn't actually expect to be leading after the round", Ryu said after making four back-nine birdies to surge pass a spluttering Henderson. As it's been a rough season for Park, she was very emotional after her win. Her 64 on Sunday marked the best final-round score in the history of the women's PGA Championship. "But on the other hand, I haven't won a major yet, so I felt like I had nothing to lose".

"Straight out of the gate, I was able to make a birdie on the first and that gave me the confidence to say, 'Hey, you can make a birdie around this golf course, '" said Ko, whose win in San Francisco in late April was her first in almost two years. "That's what really made me cry".

When it's this hot, keeping your cool is tough. After fluffing a chip behind the green, she whacked a wedge so violently into her bag that she broke the shaft.

Ryu had the right touch on her birdie putts on 14 and 15.

Park Sung-hyun poses with a trophy after winning the KPMG Women's PGA Championship on Sunday.

The final round was pushed to an earlier start with thunderstorms forecast for late afternoon in Northern Illinois.

If not for the playoff, they would have made it.

When play resumed, Ryu missed her birdie putt and Park made hers for the victory.

Two years on tour and two times a major victor for South Korea's Sung Hyun Park. The changes were effective for Park, as she had 27 putts in the final round and not a single bogey.

Park said she'd never executed a shot like that, but she didn't doubt she could pull it off. My biggest regret is 17. "I think after I won the Meijer Classic, that's the attitude I have to have for this year". Instead she had to settle for another top-ten. Today, I kind of struggled a little bit with my putter, which is disappointing, but I think just kind of get better in my head and just go out tomorrow and make a lot of good shots and see if I can make some birdies.
