Celebrities Are Losing Millions of Followers as Twitter Slashes Fake Accounts

Since Twitter announced that it would be working to reduce questionable accounts, President Trump has lost about 100,000 of his 53.4 million followers, while former president Barack Obama is down nearly 400,000 of his 104 million followers as of Wednesday, according to a report from Washington Post.

Former President Barack Obama lost quite a bit of Twitter followers this week following a Twitter purge.

While it can not be said for certain that the fluctuation in follower counts is attributable to the follower purge, CTVNews.ca's analysis of these accounts show there has been some considerable change among some of the country's most-followed politicians and political accounts.

A Twitter Inc policy change on Thursday to increase the service's credibility cost its 100 most popular users about 2 percent of their followers, on average, according to social media data firm Keyhole.

The majority of Twitter users will see a reduction of four followers or fewer, but those with larger follower counts will see a bigger drop, the company said.

Twitter said the purge is meant to boost confidence in the platform as it continues efforts to crack down on fake profiles that spread spam and political propaganda.
