'Smoke all over the place' as aircraft crashes near Wonderboom airport

About 20 people have been injured in a charter plane crash near South Africa's capital, Pretoria.

The plane crashed killing one person and injuring 20 others with injuries ranging from minor to critical, according to Russel Meiring, a spokesman for paramedic company ER24.

He said: "We suspect that the plane was on its way to the Wonderboom airport".

Unconfirmed reports said one person was critically injured.

The Aviodrome aerospace theme park in the Netherlands said on its Facebook page that it was "hugely shocked" by the crash.

Emergency services were called out to the scene just after 16:00 when the plane was found on fire in a field.

"Paramedics are treating the patients and will thereafter transport them to nearby hospital for further treatment‚" Meiring said.

The Civil Aviation Authority is expected to start an investigation into the crash as soon as all patients have been cleared from the scene.

The plane was supposed to leave South Africa around Thursday, according to Dutch news agency ANP.
