The swells generated by Chris could also cause could cause "life-threatening surf" conditions, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Packing winds of 85 mph, the storm is centered 205 miles east-southeast of North Carolina's Cape Hatteras and is headed northeast at 10 mph.

If the storm hits as expected, there could be some damage to coastal infrastructure, and potential flooding, especially on the southern Avalon.

Some weakening is forecast for Thursday, when Chris will probably become a strong post-tropical cyclone. However, meteorologists do not expect it to make landfall in any part of U.S. Moving northeast and along, but not towards, the coast, the closest its projected path comes to land is Newfoundland, Canada.

The National Hurricane Center noted at 11 a.m. EDT (1500 UTC), the center of Hurricane Chris was located near latitude 36.4 degrees north and longitude 67.8 degrees west. Total rain accumulations over Newfoundland are forecast to be from 1 to 3 inches (25 to 75 millimeters), with isolated amounts in the neighborhood of 6 inches (150 millimeters).
