According to EarthSky, it will be the longest total lunar eclipse of the 21st century. The partial eclipse of the Moon will begin at 11.54 pm on July 27.

The shadow of the Earth's atmosphere filtered through sunlight appears red when it hits the surface of the Moon, giving the eerie-looking blood moon. For viewers across India, the eclipse, both partial and total, will be visible in its entirety from all parts of the country.

It will be visible from Europe, Africa and the Middle East between sunset and midnight on July 27 and visible from Asia and Australia between midnight and sunrise on July 28.

Here's everything you need to know about the astronomical phenomenon.

A "super moon" occurs when the moon is near its closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit.

"If that were true, we'd be in big trouble given the gravitational pulls on Earth, Mars, and our moon!" the NASA website states.

This happens because blue light undergoes stronger atmospheric scattering, so red light will be the most dominant color highlighted as sunlight passes through our atmosphere and strikes the moon.

By 11.54 pm, the Moon will enter the umbra of the Earth's shadow.

"They will move through reasonably quickly but if that coincides with the peak moment of the eclipse, they could obscure the moon". There will be a total lunar eclipse on 7, September 2025, according to NASA.

Rain clouds and thunderstorms could prevent skygazers from seeing the "blood moon" lunar eclipse as forecasters warn of torrential downpours across eastern parts of Great Britain.

The rare event occurs when the Earth appears in a straight line between the Moon and the Sun. "Since, colour red has the longest wavelength, it passes through the atmosphere and reaches moon, while all other colours get scattered away", said professor of astrophysics, Patrick Dasgupta, from Delhi University.

"Hence the appellation of "Blood Moon". The next time totality lasts that long will be on June 9, 2123.

Before we had explanations before what causes the moon to appear red, ancient cultures often feared the worst. This is when the moon is completely inside the Earth's shadow and is the most spectacular part of the lunar eclipse. "The eclipse will last for 103.6 minutes", Ratnashree said.

Stargazers in the United Kingdom had to make do with watching the event on a live stream.
