Harry Kane: we could have done better

It's the unmistakeable refrain being sung, hummed and whistled wherever English football fans have gathered for the last couple of weeks, but for two decades "Three Lions" was the source of nothing but pain for England manager Gareth Southgate.

Barclaycard presents British Summer Time - which has already played host to headliners in Roger Waters and The Cure - announced they would be screening the match to 30,000 lucky England fans who registered for a ballot.

England beat Scotland 2-0 to make it to the quarter finals (Germany ultimately won the tournament) and the song became a national phenomenon, taking on a life of its own.

The event was backed by the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, who said: "World Cup fever has gripped London and the rest of the nation and we have all been swept away by the fantastic exploits of Gareth Southgate's team".

Croatia have yet to lose at this summer's World Cup, having blitzed through the group stage with wins over Nigeria, Argentina and Iceland, before edging past Denmark and Russian Federation on penalties.

"I was convinced before the World Cup that Harry Kane would have a good tournament - and he has not failed me", Marta wrote in The Guardian.

England supporters at home and in Russian Federation got behind Southgate's men, reviving the Euro 96 anthem 'Three Lions (Football's Coming Home)'.

"Football's Coming Home, as a song, I couldn't listen to it for 20 years, frankly".

"I would just walk out of the room".

"We worked as hard as we could... it hurts, it hurts a lot and it will hurt for a long time. So for me it has a slightly different feel", Southgate told reporters on Tuesday, before adding: "But it's nice to hear people are listening to it again".

I've been following the Detroit Lions for 25 years now.
