Eight boys rescued from cave in northern Thailand

The Latest: The official who led the Thai cave rescue says the medic and three Thai navy SEAL divers who stayed with the trapped boys after they were found have left the flooded cave.

The hazardous bid to rescue the boys - aged between 11 and 16 - started unexpectedly on Sunday when the rescue team said conditions were ideal for the evacuation.

It's unclear why the boys, aged 11 to 16 years old, and their 25-year-old coach entered the 10-kilometre long cave, but, according to Sky News, it was part of an initiation process for local young men.

After pondering for days how to get the 13 out, a rescue operation was launched on Sunday when four of the boys were brought out, tethered to rescue divers.

The disappearance of the boys and their novice monk turned soccer coach from this small town on the Thailand-Myanmar border - remarkably found alive nine days after they went missing June 23 - launched an extraordinary saga of global cooperation and ingenuity, as experts from many fields planned how to maneuver all 13 out alive.

Twelve boys and their football coach who were trapped in a cave in northern Thailand for more than a fortnight have been rescued in an unprecedented three-day mission that had all the features of a blockbuster film. "Everyone is in high spirits and are happy to get out". British Prime Minister Theresa May, Iceland's prime minister, Katrín Jakobsdóttir, and Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong were among other world leaders who commended the rescue team on social media.

The rescued boys are being quarantined in case any of them contracted infections while inside the cave.

US President Donald Trump hailed the rescue. However, eight boys have been brought to safety during the last two days and the remaining five are expected to be brought out today. So far, their families have seen them through a glass barrier.

Asked at a news conference in Bangkok if the boys had been sedated, Prayuth said: "Who would chloroform them? Such a handsome moment - all freed, great job!"

The 31cm-wide custom submarine would make the boys passive participants in the rescue and could potentially shorten the journey, which took divers a total of nine hours in the second successful rescue operation on Monday.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected".

Another four boys were rescued Monday.

"We would be honoured to welcome the team from the Wild Boars Football Club and their rescuers to Old Trafford this coming season".
