The storm was expected to remain well off the US coast, and latest projections show it is forecast to pass well southeast of the Canadian province of Nova Scotia in a couple of days, then move near or over southeastern Newfoundland by Friday, the hurricane center said.

The swells generated from Hurricane Chris are expected to cause "life-threatening" current conditions, the NHC says, and beachgoers and boaters on the coast of North Carolina and the mid-Atlantic states are advised to avoid the waters if possible.

Little development was expected Tuesday night due to unfavorable upper-level winds.

Chris is forecast to begin weakening Wednesday night, and the system is expected to become a strong post-tropical cyclone by Thursday night, the Florida-based weather forecaster said.
