Woman Scales Statue of Liberty After Ten 'Abolish ICE' Protestors Arrested

Footage from nearby helicopters showed the woman sitting at the base of the statue and at points lying on her stomach, occasionally kicking her feet up behind her, ABC station WABC reports.

Spokesperson Jerry Willis says people on Liberty Island were being taken to neighboring Ellis Island, Battery Park in New York City or Liberty State Park in New Jersey.

A group that organized a protest at the statue earlier Wednesday said she took part in unfurling a banner at the statue's pedestal calling for abolishing the federal government's chief immigration enforcement agency.

Activists with the group Rise and Resist said they hung the banner to protest us immigration policy.

A woman is climbing the Statue of Liberty, police said.

The activist group behind the banner, Rise and Resist, tweeted that the climber wasn't connected to its demonstration and expressed concern for the climber's safety.

It was not immediately clear whether the statue climber and demonstrators were linked.

In Moscow, US senator hopes for 'new day' in US-Russia relations
He expressed "my real hope that your visit would symbolize the resumption of relations between our two parliaments". The Kremlin said Putin did not plan to meet US lawmakers who are visiting Russian Federation this week.

The whole island was evacuated as a precaution.

Police have reached a person who scaled the base of the Statue of Liberty on the Fourth of July and appear to be trying to escort her down.

One of its members, Leon Kirschner, said: "ICE has proved to be a threat to our liberty and way of life, and should be abolished".

The protesters were detained after unveiling an "Abolish Ice" banner on the statue's pedestal. The protestor still sat at the base of the Statue of Liberty, near the foot of the monument, as of 5 p.m., he says.

The Statue of Liberty, a powerful symbol of USA freedom and long a beacon to immigrants, was shut down on Independence Day as a woman refused to leave its base in a lengthy standoff with police. We've got five things to know about her.

The Statue of Liberty has always been a welcoming symbol for immigrants and refugees coming to the U.S. It also has been a setting for protests and other actions that forced evacuations.

Earlier in the day, 7 people were arrested for protesting.
