While it is not unusual for heads of state to visit Windsor Castle or meet the UK Prime Minister in her country home, it is quite unusual for an American president not to spend any time in London.

During the dinner, they reaffirmed their strong alliance and vowed to jointly fight against terrorism and Russian aggression.

Trump's trip is the latest installment of the "special relationship" the U.S. and United Kingdom share, which has been a decades-long diplomatic and political bond.

The main national demonstration, "Together Against Trump", is planned in London for 2 p.m. Friday.

May contacted Trump days after he was inaugurated, extending the invitation for a coveted state visit that would be hosted by Queen Elizabeth II, but that gesture has proved far more controversial than expected as Trump has shown little interest in maintaining "diplomacy as usual" with European allies. Their first stop was to the ambassador's official residence at Winfield House in London, while being carefully protected from protesters. Outside the mansion, near Oxford to the northwest of London, a couple of thousand demonstrators lined the road and booed Trump's arrival, one of over 100 protests police expect to take place during his four-day trip.

The Metropolitan Police will be responsible for the protection and security of the USA president and will also try to ensure lawful protests can be staged.

On Friday night, the president will travel to Scotland, Turnberry, the South Ayrshire golf resort he bought in 2014.

"Tonight there will be protests, tomorrow there will be protests".
