Netflix Topples HBO in Emmy Nominations

For the first time, Netflix has come out on top as the platform with the most Emmy nominations.

"Game of Thrones" roared back onto the Emmy Award battlefield, topping Thursday's nominations with 22 bids but with a formidable opponent in last year's victor, "The Handmaid's Tale", while a streaming platform made history by earning the most bids for the first time.

Game of Thrones makes its Emmy comeback this year after last year's later season airdate saw it ineligible for consideration for the awards.

The HBO series' nominations included a nod for best drama series. "Atlanta" will face newcomers including "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, " "Glow" and "Barry".

The return of "Game of Thrones" during the eligibility window more than made up for the lack of "Big Little Lies" this year, with 22 nominations, including one in the drama series race.

The revival of "Roseanne, " canceled because of star Roseanne Barr's racist tweet, drew only one major nomination, a supporting actress nod for Laurie Metcalf.

Besides the repeat nomination for Dowd, "The Handmaid's Tale" scored nods for Drama Series, Actress in a Drama Series (Elisabeth Moss), Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (Joseph Fiennes), and two additional nominations for Supporting Actress in a Drama Series (Alexis Bledel and Yvonne Strahovski). Saturday Night Live and Westworld both grabbed 21 nominations each, while The Handmaid's Tale secured 20 nominations.

The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards will air on Sunday, September 17 on NBC.
