Six members of a Thai schoolboy football team have been rescued from the flooded cave where they had been trapped for more than two weeks, a local rescue official said on Sunday.

Police and military personnel use umbrellas to cover a stretcher as it is carried to a helicopter from an ambulance at a military airport in Chiang Rai, Thailand, on Monday, as rescue operations continued for those still trapped inside the cave in Khun Nam Nang Non Forest Park in the Mae Sai district.

When asked if the four boys rescued on Sunday had eaten pad grapao, the Thai meat basil dish they'd been clamoring for, Osatanakorn said no, but that they were "fine" and could eat other normal foods, like porridge, according to the Guardian.

"If we wait and the rain comes in the next few days we will be exhausted again from pumping and our readiness would drop".

The fate of the boys and their coach has gripped Thailand and drawn attention from around the world.

Four of the boys' teammates and Thai dive experts were flown to the same hospital for treatment the day before. "Today is D-Day", he told reporters, saying the group was mentally and physically prepared. New oxygen tanks were being placed before the second stage of the rescue effort began. The next day (7th July), it was decided by the rescue operation chief Narongsak Osottanakorn that it was not yet safe for the boys to dive out of the cave. Medical exams for the four boys began before they even left the cave.

They are part of a youth soccer team known as the Wild Boars. Four boys were extracted Monday, while four others were taken out Sunday.

But Narongsak said earlier that mild weather and falling water levels over the last few days had created optimal conditions for an underwater evacuation that won't last if it rains again.

Extracting everyone could take up to four days, but the initial success has raised hopes that could be done.

Earlier on Sunday, Ten Eyewitness News understands Thai Navy SEAL divers and worldwide divers held a briefing before authorities ordered an evacuation of the area around the Tham Luang cave complex. "When they're deprived of light and their comfort issues from home, there can be psychological sequelae that have to be addressed, and we've seen that before with people who have been held hostage or in kind of hard environmental situations", Ashton said, using a medical term for the after-effects of a traumatic incident.

Officials told Reuters that Monday's rescue operation would take between 10 and 20 hours.

Unconfirmed reports that the boys' coach, Ekapol Chanthawong, 25, was among the first four to be evacuated because of the poor state of his health, were dismissed on Monday.

Thai authorities revealed that the first phase was executed "smoothly" and the boys who had been evacuated were in "good health".

Elon Musk's Space X rocket company is testing a "kid-sized submarine" that could be sent to help boys trapped in a flooded Thailand cave.

Rescue operations had initially been put on hold to ensure the boys had regained enough strength to make the treacherous 3.2km trek out of the caves.

Musk posted videos on Twitter of the aluminum sub being tested at a swimming pool Sunday midafternoon California time.

The rescue teams had rehearsed the plan for several days, Narongsak said, and had managed to drain the water level in the cave considerably, but needed to move fast.
