The White House believes the meeting should happen after the Russia investigation ends

Trump weathered fierce criticism after his summit last week with Putin in Helsinki after he appeared to give credence to the Russian leader's assertion that Moscow did not interfere in the 2016 usa presidential election.

The expression of concern about Russian meddling is a change in tone for the president, who has repeatedly expressed doubts about Russia's role in interfering in the 2016 USA election. The White House said last week that Trump had directed Bolton to invite Putin to Washington for a meeting in the fall.

Last week, the White House announced that Trump had asked Bolton to invite Putin to Washington in the fall for a follow-up meeting to their summit in Helsinki this month.

Trump on Tuesday shifted his position on Russian election interference again, claiming it's targeting the 2018 midterms to help Democrats win.

The U.S. intelligence community determined in January 2017 that Russian Federation sought to interfere in the 2016 presidential election in a bid to undercut Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. That announcement followed the two world leaders holding their first summit in Helsinki.

In Wednesday's White House statement, Bolton indicated the Mueller probe would be over by January 1.

Despite the furore, Trump said he was looking forward to hosting Putin in Washington and the White House said such a meeting may come this autumn.

Trump's lawyers continue to negotiate on terms of an interview with Mueller and have offered to make the president available exclusively to answer questions about whether his campaign colluded with Russian Federation. The groups most likely to say Russian Federation won't do anything are strong Republicans (63 percent), Donald Trump supporters (58 percent), and white evangelical Christians (54 percent).

He also reiterated US support for an investigation that held Russian Federation responsible for downing a Malaysian airliner over east Ukraine in 2014.

Pompeo is expected to face tough questioning from committee members about Trump's summit with Putin. "The incorrect transcript dropping out the question when Putin was asked if he wanted Trump to win the election, and we can report that the White House video of this exchange has also skillfully cut out that question from the Reuters reporter as if it didn't happen".

Former CIA director John Brennan criticised Trump's relationship with Putin as "nothing short of treasonous" whilst senior Republican Newt Gingrich described it as "the most serious mistake of his presidency". It was, after all, given to the president by the leader of Russian Federation, a country who is no stranger to all sorts of hacking - including the 2016 US election.

The poll shows the American public's views on Trump, Russia and Mueller's investigation have not shifted much over time, said Lee Miringoff, who directs the Marist Institute for Public Opinion.
