It's not clear at the moment if other models are affected.

"Last night around 2.30am, my phone sent [my girlfriend] my entire photo gallery over text but there was no record of it on my messages app", one Reddit user complained.

A Samsung spokesperson, as reported in The Verge, said that the company is aware of the reports, and its technical teams are looking into the matter. Other Reddit posters have said their wives or other people on their shared family plans have received similar messages from other phones including the Note 8. "We encourage any customers who may have questions or concerns to contact their local Customer Service Center at 1-800-SAMSUNG". The issue seems to be limited to T-Mobile customers in the United States.

A spokeswoman for Samsung Australia confirmed the company was investigating the problem but had yet to verify if it was a bug and whether Australians could be affected. Some Samsung devices send their owners' photos to contacts randomly and without trace.

Until Samsung releases a patch to address this issue, there are several ways to protect your photos from being transmitted without your permission.

In the meantime, it has been suggested that users should switch to a different messaging app.

If you use a Samsung phone and use the default Samsung Messenger app to send text messages, you probably should make sure you don't have any scandalous photos on your phone. The messaging app showed no indication of the dispatch, but the user's carrier logs had documented it. You will have full texting capabilities and you don't have to look back, in case Samsung lost your trust forever.

Because Samsung Messages is presumably accessing your photos directly through the app, you can shut off its access right at the source.

A prevailing theory on the Samsung message board is that the bug is caused by a unusual interaction between Samsung Messages and recent RCS (Rich Communication Services) profile updates that have rolled out on carriers including T-Mobile.

Once you've done this, you'll no longer be able to open your conversations or compose new messages in the Samsung Messages app, as long as you continue to deny storage permissions.
