To keep homes cool, the Met Office has advised shading windows and shutting them during the day - which will make sure no hot air comes in.

"In the meantime however conditions will remain rather dry, though overcast at times, and staying rather muggy throughout with temperatures ranging between 17-22 degrees in the west, and between 21-25 degrees over eastern areas".

The Met Office is predicting a maximum temperature of 28C (82.4F) for Shropshire and Mid Wales on Tuesday, rising to 29C (84.2F) on Wednesday and pushing past 30C on Thursday (86F).

The Met Office triggers its level three, or amber, warning when its threshold temperatures - of 30C in the daytime and 15C at night time - are reached for at least two consecutive days.

It comes as the United Kingdom prepares to see its hottest day of the year so far this week.

"Off the-scale" highs verging on July's 36.7C temperature record, set on July 1, 2015, at Heathrow, were forecast by The Weather Outlook.

The temperatures today beat the 33C (91.4F) recorded in Porthmadog in Wales on 28 June.

While the grass has turned yellow, the heatwave is prompting wild berries to ripen in the countryside much earlier than usual, according to the Woodland Trust. The lack of rain has caused the countryside to display signs of autumn as the heat prompts leaves to change colour and berries to ripen.

Dr Thomas Waite, consultant in health protection at Public Health England, said: "Temperatures are likely be high in parts of England this week, which may leave older people, young children and those with long-term conditions, including heart and lung diseases, struggling to adapt to the heat".

Phil Garner, forecaster at Weatherquest, said the heat wave was far from over.

A spokesman for Network Rail said: "During the hot weather we advise passengers to check National Rail Enquiries for the latest travel information".

Hot air surging towards the United Kingdom from southern Europe - dubbed the "Mediterranean Melt" by forecasters - and high pressure to the east are causing temperatures to skyrocket.

"We do see a rise in the number of people we treat during hot weather but there is also a rise in the number of tourists in the county".

Instead of 23C (73.4F) which could usually be expected in London in July, temperatures could tip 34C (93.2F).
