That gritty new Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix has officially been confirmed

A new Joker origin story movie starring Joaquin Phoenix in the title role is officially happening, with production to begin this September, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The film will be written by director Phillips alongside Scott Silver (8 Mile and The Fighter).

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the standalone film was picked up by Warner Bros. and will begin filming in NY this September with Phoenix playing Batman's arch-nemesis. " This description, coupled with reports that DC has multiple Joker films in development, leads to the burning question: Who, exactly, is this "cautionary tale" for?" In recent months, Josh Brolin's Thanos took the crown for most loved villain, but before the Mad Titan hit movie screens, the Joker was king.

Martin Scorsese was previously attached to the movie as a producer but is now reportedly not involved, with Scorsese's producer Emma Tillinger Koskoff on board with Richard Baratta.

"I don't could be an interesting character, I don't know", Phoenix told Fandango in April, adding that he wouldn't be opposed to comic book movies if the conditions were right. I don't really care about the genre, I care about the character and the filmmaker.

Phoenix's Joker however will be a separate standalone interpretation on the character, which isn't connected to the DC universe depicted in Justice League and Suicide Squad.

Pictures announced today that Joaquin Phoenix will star in an origin story of one of DC's most notorious Super-Villains, the Joker.

However insiders claim the finished film could be ready for a late 2019 release.
