CVS pharmacist fired after refusing to fill transgender woman's hormone prescription | TheHill

CVS is apologizing for the actions of a pharmacists here in the Valley who refused to fill a hormone prescription for a transgender woman that pharmacists was sacked.

"On a recent day in April, I left my doctor's office elated".

"He did not give me a clear reason for the refusal", Hall wrote, "embarrassed and distressed, I almost started crying in the middle of the store", she continued.

Kilar said the ACLU's objective in helping publicize Hall's experience was ensuring that CVS makes clear to customers that it will not tolerate discrimination from employees on the basis of gender identity.

Hall added that the experience left him feeling "embarrassed and stressed" to the point where he nearly broke down crying in the store. The state law does not mention hormone therapy prescriptions. "I felt like the pharmacist was trying to out me as transgender in front of strangers".

She said she "froze" and tried to hold back her tears.

But the pharmacist, who has not been identified, refused to fill the prescription did not give a reason why and instead questioned who and why gave Hill the prescription, Hill said. The office called the CVS for Hall to get the prescription filled but again the pharmacist refused.

She talked to 12 News about the incident making headlines-a transgender woman describing how a pharmacists at this CVS in Fountain Hills refused to fill her prescription for hormones.

"CVS Health extends its honest apologies to Ms. Hall for her experience at our pharmacy in Fountain Hills, Arizona last spring", said Mike DeAngelis, Senior Director of Corporate Communications for CVS.

In Hall's case, she said she complained to CVS, and never got an apology. The woman's doctor had told her the pregnancy was unviable, and another Walgreens filled her prescription.

Arizona is one of six states with "conscience clauses" to protect pharmacists who do not wish to fill prescriptions on moral or religious grounds, according to the National Women's Law Center.

She says she left a complaint with a CVS corporate office several times.

The company said the employee had been fired, but did not disclose if it happened immediately or after media reports on the incident.

She claims the pharmacist loudly questioned her in front of other customers and rejected her and her doctor's requests to transfer the prescription to another location.

DeAngelis said the company did not appropriately respond to Hall's complaint because of an "unintentional oversight". Since her story was posted on the ACLU website, Hall has spoken with a CVS representative about the incident.

ACLU Senior Staff Attorney Joshua Block said the assurances from the pharmacy chain are important at a moment in time when the Trump administration has signaled its intent to roll back health care protections for transgender and non-binary individuals. However, pharmacists are required under state law to inform the company "in advance about any religious convictions".
