CNN is fake news.

Roberts also said it was similarly wrong for Trump to call Kristen Welker of NBC News dishonest.

Trump: "See, that's such dishonest reporting", he said, lambasting both NBC and CNN, which he frequently lumps together.

"No, no. John Roberts, go ahead".

"CNN is fake news", Trump said.

A few minutes later, the CNN reporter Jim Acosta asked the president for a question "since you attacked CNN". I don't take questions- I don't take questions from CNN. "John Roberts from Fox", he continued.

Though CNN-bashing is no new thing for Trump, many wondered at the fact that he went out of his way during an worldwide press conference to insinuate that CNN is not a real network, and the fact that other media outlets allowed it to happen. Meanwhile, he frequently praises the right-leaning Fox and willingly takes interviews with Fox & Friends.

Trump's tantrum was first sparked when NBC reporter Kristen Welker asked if his recent criticism of US allies helps Russian President Vladimir Putin.

A spokesperson for Wintershall said in response to emailed questions the company doesn't comment on political statements. In addition, he noted that the gas pipeline could become an instrument of struggle in the hands of the Kremlin.

Roberts took heat on social media for not immediately defending Acosta - but issued a statement hours later tamping down the dust up.

In a statement, the Sun said it stood by its reporting.

"To say the President called us "fake news" with any serious intent is, well... fake news", the Sun concluded.

"Saying a news organization isn't real doesn't change the facts and won't stop us from doing our jobs", the association said. I know Kristen Welker of NBC.

Trump also called out NBC. They have fine journalists there who risk their lives to cover the news around the world. However, Roberts later stated that Trump's comments were "unfair". She's as honest as the day is long.

Not everyone is convinced that Roberts' response was genuine, including CNN's vice president of communications, Matt Dornic.
